Objects that hold the light.
Furniture and objects for Mediterranean rooms — travertine, olive oak, raw linen, fired clay. Worked slowly, by six pairs of hands.
ScrollMARRA began with a quarry outside Oudtshoorn and a stubborn conviction that furniture should be made of the place it comes from. Travertine cut within sixty kilometres of the workshop. Oak from orchards that stopped bearing. Linen woven in Swellendam.
Nothing is finished until it has stood in a room for a week and been looked at in every light. Most pieces do not survive that. The ones that do are the collection.
We add one piece a year and retire one. The collection has been eight pieces since 2019 and will be eight pieces in 2040.

Every form begins as a single continuous line on paper. It is thrown, dried, fired and broken as many times as it takes for the line and the object to agree with one another. The Salto vessel took eleven.

A room is not decorated. It is weathered — slowly, by the people who live in it.

The workshop is a converted fruit shed in Salt River. Everything MARRA has ever sold was made in it. We have turned down every offer to make more, faster, elsewhere.
The Salt River workshop is open by appointment on Thursdays and Fridays. Bring the dimensions of your room and a photograph of its light at four in the afternoon.
